  I have a 5 year old autistic child. Getting my child into a waiting room can sometimes be quite the feat. Getting my child into an exam room is impossible. Most medical professionals know that in order to treat a person with ASD, you often must make provisions as reasoning with the patient may not be an option. Forcing my child into an exam room does little to facilitate an actual exam, therefore rendering said attempts fruitless. We have had both Social and Medical professionals make certain accommodations for our son, mostly by electing to exam or evaluate him in a more neutral setting. This works for the examiner by giving them an accurate evaluation on an unstressed patient. This also works for our son providing a better, more accurate diagnosis of what medical or social services he may need. Our experiences at the Omni Center in Wasco have been more than disappointing. When we informed the medical assistant that our child had ASD. She proceeded to get in his face and talk louder and slower. "Miss, he is autistic, not deaf." That particular visit was pointless as that our son was under duress and the assistant couldn't even establish his vitals. The med assistant informed us that they have no experience with autistic children and we should return if he develops a cold or something. Our second visit was even less productive. Our son refused to go into an exam room. We requested that the pediatrician examine our son in a more neutral environment, outside in the grass or even the waiting room. The pediatrician refused to examine our son outside of the actual exam room. Making such accommodations are not in violation of any HIPA laws. The pediatrician is the liaison between our son and special needs services. As a result of a pediatrician that refuses to accommodate her patients particular needs. Some of our sons needed services have been delayed or even denied. My wife and I are looking forward to leaving Wasco and getting our son a pediatrician that will address his case as real medical PROFESSIONALS. Veterinary clinics provide better services than Omni Family Health in Wasco.
